Selling on Amazon vs. eBay can be effective methods for making money. Almost everyone has had the idea to sell items that they no longer use or even become their own boss and begin selling high demand products on these platforms. The easiest way to sell something is online, after all. While there are tons of websites to choose from, the most popular are Amazon and eBay. 

When deciding which is best for you to sell your items, you’ll have to consider the following:

If you’re choosing between Amazon and eBay, it’s important to know if you can sell the items you want to sell on these websites. 

Items You Can Sell on Amazon

Amazon has over 30 categories of items that you can sell, but only some of these are open to all sellers. You may have to have a Professional Seller account to have access to some categories while others aren’t accepting new sellers yet. 

Amazon is typically ideal for selling products that are new instead of used ones, although used book sales are very popular and one of the best categories in the FBA program. You can also sell certified refurbished goods in some categories, but they’ll have to meet Amazon’s requirements.

There are also the categories available only to sellers with a Professional account, including:

You may also want to consider the Amazon Handmade program if you make homemade or handmade goods and want to sell them. This is similar to Etsy. To sell these products, you’ll have to complete an online application, which is separate from the registration to become a seller. 

Items You Can Sell on eBay

eBay is most ideal for second-hand goods. However, you can sell almost anything on eBay, whether it’s new or used. There are certain items that eBay does not allow, including the following:

  • Used Cosmetics
  • Weapons 

How Each Website Works

To sell on either Amazon or eBay, you’ll follow the same basic steps, including setting up an account, listing the items for sale, and shipping them to buyers. 


To sell products on Amazon, you’ll set up a Seller Account. This five-step process is pretty simple, and anyone can be approved to sell on Amazon as long as they follow the rules. 

You’ll have to provide information about the products you wish to sell, but that doesn’t have to be done immediately. 


To sell on eBay, you’ll create the basic eBay account by registering. You can also choose to set up a business account. 

The Costs

Each website comes with its own set of fees that you should always take into consideration. 

Amazon Fees

There are two separate pricing plans for becoming an Amazon seller. The Individual seller plan has no monthly fee, but you will pay $0.99 for every item you list on the website. The Professional seller account costs only $39.99 a month to list as many items you want. If you plan on selling tons of items, it’s more cost-effective to get the Professional account. 

Other fees for the Amazon FBA program include

  • Refund fees

eBay Fees

eBay typically has fewer fees than Amazon. You can expect these two fees from eBay:

Insertion fees: These are the fees for listing an item on eBay. It’s usually $0.35 per item. 

Final value fees: When an item sells, you pay eBay a final value fee, similar to Amazon’s referral fee. It’s typically 10% of the final price, including shipping and handling.
